Appraisals
Phil has a longstanding interest in the critical appraisal of fiction. He has tutored a number of courses for the Arvon Foundation and in the past he has acted as external assessor for the creative writing MA at the University of East Anglia. He has been a judge for the Betty Trask Awards and The New Writer Prose and Poetry Awards.
Phil’s current posts include literary consultant to YouWriteOn, the Arts Council-sponsored website. New writers exchange critiques and each month the highest rated receive a free appraisal from the site’s literary professionals, who include a leading London literary agent. Top agents The Christopher Little Agency and Curtis Brown also consider highly rated new authors. Phil helped to devise the unique ratings engine at the heart of this innovative web-based resource for aspiring authors. He is a judge for the site’s first Book of the Year Award.
In 2001 Phil teamed up with novelist Martyn Bedford to launch Literary Intelligence, a critical appraisal service for aspiring authors. Now entering its sixth year, Literary Intelligence offers expert appraisal and development advice to writers in the field of fiction.
